The best analogy of someone’s faith journey, is that of a journey of 1,000 miles on foot. When it comes to growing in our faith, or spiritual maturity, we never arrive. There is always another step to be taken. That’s why we call our discipleship pathway here at LifeSwitch, ‘Take a Step’.
No matter where you are on your journey, the best thing you can do is simply take a step. To do this we should firstly focus on our direction not current location. We can’t do anything about where we are on the journey, about our current location. We can look back on life and say ‘if only ….’ but we can’t go back and change it. We are where we are. Yet we have full control over our direction. We can either step towards God or away from Him.
Are we stepping towards Christ likeness or away from it? Are we heading in the direction of our Heavenly Father or away from Him? As long as we are heading in the right direction, we are stepping forward.
Secondly we should focus on progress, not perfection. We can never be perfect, and if perfection is the expectation, we will always beat ourselves up, as we will never ever make it. However we can all make progress. We might not yet be where we want to be, but we can celebrate that we are further along today than we were yesterday. If we simply keep stepping in the right direction it is amazing how much growth and maturity will come.
To make it as easy as possible for every person to take a step, we have created a three stage discipleship pathway. This is made up of:
- FIRST STEP – If you’re curious about God, very new to faith, or coming back to church after some time away, ‘Starting Point’ is for you.
- NEXT STEP – The Fresh Start course – is designed to give new christians (and anyone else) a great introduction to the foundation of their faith.
- KEEP STEPPING – No matter how long you’ve been a Christian, it is essential to be moving forward in your faith. ‘Core 4’ offers you resources and support to continuously keep stepping.
So whether you are currently exploring faith, new to faith, or have been growing in your faith for decades, there is a clear step for you.
All of this will be primarily outworked through our ‘Take a Step’ website, still under construction, and going live by the end of August. This will empower all of us to identify and take our next best step in a safe way. We will be putting in place clear processes and opportunities for people to be able to talk things through with someone (either in person or online) as they begin and thereafter.
We are committed to being a church where everyone is empowered to grow and are fully enabled and inspired to own their own spiritual growth. We have no doubt this take a step framework will make this happen.
