Wasn’t it great to get such a concise overview of the Old testament on Sunday morning? Yet, depending on how long you have been around Christianity, you may or may not be very familiar with the Bible.
I remember when I first started looking into Christianity in my late teens, how overwhelming and intimidating it looked. Since then, as I’ve learnt and developed and talked to others about their experiences, I’ve identified four big challenges most people face when it comes to getting to know the Bible.  However, I don’t want to simply point out the challenge, but also point you to a great resource that will help you push past the problem and help you take your next steps in exploring Christianity or following Christ.

1.  YOU FEEL NAIVE AND KNOW VERY FEW (IF ANY) BIBLE STORIES
This is exactly where I was when I became a christian. I knew like zero of the big accounts of people we in the bible, let alone the idea of trying to connect the dots between the different accounts. So I went and brought a KIDS BIBLE, this allowed me to get a great overview in a short space of time. I still didn’t know everything, but this allowed me to discover Daniel was the guy who went into the lions den; Joseph, well it taught me there were two different Joseph’s – Jesus’ Dad and the one who got sold by his brothers. Moses was the one who lead the Israelites out of Egypt… and on and on I could go.
The Jesus Storybook Bible is the one I would recommend. In fact, we think it is so good, we gift one to every kid at Switch Kids on their fifth birthday.

2.  YOU TRY AND READ THE BIBLE AND IT DOESN’T MAKE MUCH SENSE
Honestly, there are still passages that I read and this is the case. I cannot recommend strongly enough that people get their hands on a study bible. One that includes notes that go along with what you’re reading to help contextualise and explain things that we would otherwise miss. Hands down, the number one that I’d recommend is the NLT Life Application Bible. The notes it includes are super clear, concise and help you really understand what you’re reading. Plus it is applicational focused. I use this myself.

3.  YOU KNOW A LOT OF THE CONTENT, BUT ARE STRUGGLING TO CONNECT THE DOTS OF SCRIPTURE
You need to get your hands on a copy of Learn the Bible in 24 Hours. I read this a few summers ago and found it absolutely fascinating, insightful and got me pumped to read my Bible with new eyes. It helped me see things I’d never seen before and would never have seen without being shown.

4.  YOU HAVE BEEN READING THE BIBLE IN A DEVOTIONAL MANNER, BUT NOT SURE HOW TO DO DEEPER STUDY
Rick Warren’s Bible Study Methods is an extremely practical book that equipped me and revolutionised my personal Bible study. It covers a number of ways you can study the Bible. It gives templates, examples and really sets you up to go hard and study for yourself.
